Linocuts for Khatulistiwa

Based in Canggu, Bali, Khatulistiwa is Kartina Dirix and Leonard Lumanauw. This adventurous couple decided to run a travel consultancy business, with diving and surfing as their forte. Thus born Khatulistiwa.

Khatulistiwa is an Indonesian derived from Arabic word, means equator. The 1984 is appointed as their brand consultant. You see with a brand direction as organic and honest as theirs, you should make something with rough edges too. We tried several methods, digitally creating it only makes it look more fake so we keep coming back to the traditional ones.

The illustrations are inspired by Sumba motifs, we drew it by hand then we carved them to lino pads. Uneven stamp, with imperfect hand-carved shapes.. now that's what we are looking for! The results are impressive in its own way, it gives you this adventurous call but at the same time feels very laid back. Pretty much depicts the feeling of travelling in Indonesia.

This is a work in progress, currently we are processing these images to layout. So thrilled to have them in production soon.

How to get to Toraja from Jakarta:

We flew Garuda from Jakarta to Makassar, then continue on an 8 hour car journey north to Tana Toraja. You can ride a coach bus or rent a car but we opted for the second (including a local driver hehe). As we land in Makassar in the evening, we split the car journey in half, resting one night in Pare Pare. The second half of the journey was definitely the most beautiful (do ask to stop at Bukit Nona in Enrekang!), but always remind the driver to be alert and careful as they tend to drive fast, and I mean like crazy fast.

The 1984 Risograph Calendar

So we decided to develop a risograph printed calendar as The 1984's christmas/new year gift for our clients and vendors.

Our art director Jona created the whole images, then we print them on Speedball printmaking paper, using Riso. We've chosen 4 colors; black, red, yellow, and blue. We sewn bound the calendar ourselves, then added the hole.

Postcards from Lombok pt 1

This is from our Lombok trip last October together with The 1984. Part 1 is where we meander around Tanjung Aan in the southern part of Lombok.

Tanjung Aan is a quieter part of Lombok. I like it in this area, it's very laid back you can hear the sea and the wind. Just slow and easy.

I think the fastest way to go to Tanjung Aan is from Kuta beach (yes there is also a Kuta beach in Lombok). We stayed in Kuta beach and it only took us approximately 20 minutes by car to get there.

Happy New Year and A New Blog

Last picture of 2015 from my phone

With each year passing by I often feel that everything moves so fast that it feels like one big blur. 2015 has been especially rough in terms of pace, everything gushes in that it is overwhelming most of the times. It has also been an especially rough year for our health, I can't remember how many times we rush to the emergency throughout the year. I got hospitalized once. My husband got hospitalized twice.

So we agreed to slow everything down by bit. Hoping to see clearer picture better than these blurry images passing just like that. And so that's why I decided to make this blog, recollecting moments from the past, and keeping the future ones. I'd prefer the nicer ones though.

My name is Irawandhani Kamarga, you can call me Wanda for short. I live in Jakarta, blogging mostly about daily life with The 1984, Jalan Kenangan, Binatang Press!, my dogs, and my travels. Here's more about me
